How to Quickly Relieve Your Child's Croup Coughing at Home
Nothing is scarier than being awakened in the middle of the night with your young child sobbing between hoarse coughs and gasping for breath. Your first reaction is to call an ambulance, your second to race out to the Emergency Room. But the problem isn't as critical as it seems, and you can minimize most or all of the danger easily in the comfort of your home. Then you can leisurely visit your doctor the next morning.
1
Get a hold of yourself! Your biggest problem is your own anxiety. Nothing is worse for a child suffering a physical challenge than a look and tone of desperation and fear in her parents. Give her a warm hug and tell her it's going to all right in a few minutes--and believe it!
2
Take her in the bathroom, close the door and turn the hot water spigot in the shower on full blast. Sit down and talk softly and encouragingly to her, gently massaging her back and chest-just trust your instincts on comforting her. Shortly the bathroom will turn into a steam room. Stay there until the coughing subsides, even if it takes 15 or 20 minutes--usually only a few minutes once the steam starts flowing.
3
When the hot water runs out, if she is still coughing, quickly bundle her (and you) up in a warm clothes, coat and hat, then take her outside into the cold night air. Allow her to breathe the cold air for another 10 to 15 minutes before going back inside.
4
If neither of these steps produces the desired results, you're already dressed and ready to go to the ER. But probably this will work.
5
The next day, visit your pediatrician and purchase a humidifier at a pharmacy or department store.
